One Word: crime
They said it was a crime
a crying shame
a shameful thing
to even speak of it
think of it
nevermind say it out loud
for crying out
but I think itΓΒ less
for bringing to the light
of day
of daylights scared out of
the bejeesus
well evil likes dark
don’t ya know
knowledge of good
and evil
shut the door
keep it out
it will out
it always does
those chickens just love
to roost
I like that “it” stays unnamed, but we keep bouncing all around it. I can see this one as a Greg Brown song…
Mama used to say “Your chickens always come home to roost” and the rest of the piece just went along with those old saws that were always supposed to keep us children feeling guilty before we even thought about doing something (insert whatever here) wrong – that and knowing that mama would ALWAYS find out π
wasn’t familiar with Greg Brown, a situation that I am in the process of rectifying. Found he was married to Iris Dement who I had heard of which led me to John Prine and Iris singing “In Spite Of Ourselves” which was absolutely hilarious, and then I had to listen to “Angel From Montgomery” which is a favorite and Iris and Emmy singing Jambalaya and well, there went the day π
